2020 in Review

January was an exciting month, as we planned and enjoyed a trip to Israel with church friends! You saw the photos and heard the stories, and I promise I will not pull them out again right now...lol!

February was recovering from the flu, and wondering about this new virus.

March was watching the world shut down, and wondering what it would mean over the next few weeks, as well as starting to record video sermons. Schools closed before the end of the month, and so did many other things. Stay Home Ohio was a thing.

April was figuring out how to "do church" when the novel Coronavirus decided to celebrate Easter with us. This is when we started to see that it would be more than a few weeks of disruption. Baseball did not start on time, as mass gatherings were banned.

May, at the church where I work, was spent bringing Hope Crosses to our community...trying to provide some light in the darkness of the unknown. And we learned to Zoom.

June found us waiting again, hopeful that the heat of summer would destroy the virus, so our lives could go back to "normal," but we were quite disappointed. Still, I virtually attended a knitting retreat via Zoom...and it was super fun!

July brought a mask mandate to Ohio, and normal became new once again. We Zoomed meetings at work, Bible studies and knitting groups...and there were some small meetings outdoors. No hugs, but it was good to be face-to-face again.

August had us watching and wondering whether public and private schools and colleges would open in the fall. Some did, many did not. Professional sports had resumed, to a limited degree, and we were now wondering if school sports would be possible.

September was Back-to-School, but not "as usual." Some schools met online only, some in-person, some as a hybrid of the two. I honed my video-editing skills, and learned a lot of new technology. Oh, and a presidential election was on the horizon. What will that look like? Learning to Live Stream was the next big thing!

October brought Pop Pop and me a new grandson, and we celebrated life! We also wondered what tricks-and-treats would look like. Our main goal was staying healthy so we could keep seeing our family, we had our "bubble" figured out.

November's election, as you might imagine, was heated and weird. Mailed in ballots. Early voting. Polling places open on election day, and a spike in the virus about two weeks later. Then Thanksgiving.

December kept the virus numbers high, as people kept getting together for holidays. (No judgement here...not seeing the ones we love is so very difficult!) Then Christmas and New Years...I expect to see another spike in a week or two. We will deal with that when it comes.

Through it all, I've lost several dear-to-me friends and family members. People got married. Weddings and funerals and church and school were live streamed, and everything is a little more strange in 2020. Grieving and celebrating via Zoom, over the phone, in texts...so very strange. But we still connect. And I still knit.

I've knit sweaters, hats, gloves, toys, ornaments, socks...so there's my normal. Just keep swimming...err, knitting...is keeping me going. When I get tired, I try to rest. When I don't know, I Google. When I think I can't, I ask for help. When I learn a new thing, I celebrate.

While I know that 2021 will not bring an instant fix to any of it, I do look forward to another fresh start. I plan to cast on something new tomorrow, something hopeful and fun, and I plan to Knit in Good Health. I hope you will join me!

In the new year, I wish you this:
May all your yarn be untangled.
May your needles and stitch markers always be close at hand.
May you find just the right pattern and supplies, at the same time, most of the time this year.

Happy New Year, friends!

Santa? Is that you?

It's been a long time since Santa came to our house...but there are granddaughters asleep in just the next room this year! I'm glad Snowflake the Elf let him know they were here!

Merry Christmas to all of you!

Now, grab your coffee, open some gifts and Knit in Good Health!

Six

Six days until Christmas, and my house is a wreck, but I am ok with it! Kiddos have landed, with all their stuff...

And it is glorious! Cramped, but glorious! Even Snowflake showed up, and she didn't even RSVP!
At least she doesn't each much...and we don't have to make up a bed,
because she goes back to the North Pole every night to report in!

It has been years since we have had teddy bears under our tree, but this year will be a different story. As a  matter of fact, this bear was a gift to our boy on his first Christmas. Now, here it is, under our tree again on a year that his children will wake up here on Christmas morning!

So, yes. It is 6 days before Christmas. There are still a few things to be done, but we are mostly there. And some things will simply be what they are, done or not. Including blog posts like this one (which was quite hastily written!).

Are you ready? Have you already celebrated your winter holiday? I would love to hear about your traditions, so drop a comment if you have a minute! Then get back at it...because there are only a few days left to this year!

Thanks for taking a moment to stop by in the middle of this very busy season, and Knit (if you have any time left) in Good Health!

12 Days Before Christmas Eve

12 days before Christmas Eve. Today is twelve days before Christmas Eve. I know this is true, because I have opened 12 days of Advent yarn
I purchased this Advent Yarn Calendar from
Suburban Stitcher, and it is worth every penny!
from two different kits.
I won this Advent Yarn Calendar from 716knits
in a contest with my online knitting group!
12 days into December this year, despite all this pretty yarn, I am stressed.

When I was in 4th or 5th grade, the elementary school choir sang a song called "12 Days Before Christmas," and I remember it being the coolest song of all time. Every year, at about this time, I think about that song, and I search the internet for any iteration of it...but to no avail. I remember the chorus went like this:
"12 days before Christmas, I was very upset and blue -
12 days before Christmas, I had nothing to give to you!
I had nothing to wrap, nothing to spend,
Nothing to buy, nothing to send!
12 days before Christmas, I had nothing to giiiiiiiive -- to you!"

I am going to pause here to say that if you know this song, or where I might find a recording, or sheet music, anything to prove that it is a real song and not just a figment of my imagination, please send me a link! Seriously. I love the memory of this song! Having the complete lyrics/music would make my heart (and likely my mouth) sing!

As Christmas approaches this year, I find myself frustrated in the way of this song. There are still several people on my list that I don't have anything for...I am embarrassed at my anxiety over Christmas shopping in this season of pandemic, and stifled in the thought of what would even make good gifts this year. And I know I am running out of time. The struggle is real.

Getting back to that song, it ends up on a pretty good note. The resolution to the problem goes something like this:
It was a little bit tattered, a little bit torn,
A little bit battered, a little bit worn
(Forgive me friends, but my memory of this part is spotty. The gift was wrapped up in ribbons...something, something, something...but ultimately...)
It was ME!

So this year, 12 days before Christmas Eve, this is what I've got:

I'm working on the Christmas candy. It is coming along.

I'm doing some knitting, though not really for Christmas gifts...more to ease my anxious thoughts.

I'm still shopping online, and in person, even though I know that some things may have no hope of being delivered on time.

I am stressing about the day not being perfect, and I am telling myself (again this year, over and over, ad nauseum) that it does not need to be a perfect day. Or a perfect couple of days. Or a perfect anything. Christmas only needs to be a simple celebration of family. A simple celebration of my earthly family, and my faith family. "With God as our father, brothers all are we..."

12 days before Christmas, I am trying to wrap my head around being present in the moments around Christmas and through the rest of this year, whatever that may bring.

If you are also stressed, please know that you are not alone. Take a deep breath. Make a cup of tea. Take a tip from Elsa, and let it go where you can. And breathe, just breathe...maybe read a blog or two. :winky face:

Thanks for stopping by.

Knit in Good Health, and spread some holiday cheer, even if you holiday is not the same as mine!
A few more of my favorite things.

How Many Words?

I have a lot of words.

I also have a lot of pictures!

I know you have limited time, especially in December! So, let's try a new approach...

Christmas is coming, so let's get glittery!
This is a celebration just waiting to happen!

The girls agree!

Each has her favorite ornaments...

...and they need to be placed "just so..."

Pop Pop and I are "Rock Stars" when we visit.
It is good to get outdoors.

Someone told a joke...

Gramma almost fell off the rock!

Everything at this house is dynamic! Well, everything except the trampoline...that's "static," so to speak!
Look at that long hair!

It's electric!

Picture, picture, picture, sweater! Sweaters are like squirrels...at least for me they are! I saw this pattern and had to knit one. I couldn't even wait for the pattern to be released, so I caught the designer while she was recruiting test knitters, and I asked to be on the team...she said yes!
I said "Yes!" to this sweater!

Sooo, if a picture is worth 1,000 words, and I have given you 10 pictures...well, I may be over my quota for this blog post! Still, I have just a few more, because this is the year I bought myself an Advent Yarn Calendar! I actually bought one, and WON one in a contest, so here's my first 4 days (because I have not yet opened day 5 of either one):
Purchased Yarn Advent from Suburban Stitcher, Neutral Fade!
Yarn Advent won in contest from 716Yarn, Knit Buffalo!
24 stripe sock set purchased from Cozy Knitter. (center pic)

So, actual word count today (up to this point): 271
Picture count: 11 (unless you count that last one as 9, then there are 19!)

Total word count: 11,271 (or 19,271...depending how you count the pictures)

Must be time for me to sign off!

Thanks for stopping by, and Knit in Good Health!
